Greatest Hypeman
Giphy: NBA
“And I tell you, ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.
For everyone who asks, receives; and the one who seeks, finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.
What father among you would hand his son a snake when he asks for a fish?
Or hand him a scorpion when he asks for an egg?
If you then, who are wicked, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the Father in heaven give the holy Spirit to those who ask him?"
Luke 11: 9-13
As I heard the words of this Gospel on the Alpha retreat this past weekend, I was instantly transported to the moment I watched Steph Curry become the basketball player to make the most career 3-point field goals. They immediately stopped the game to celebrate and in the midst of the fanfare, as Steph sits on the bench, teary eyed with a towel over his head, his longtime teammate celebrates, yelling how proud he is of him with all of the joy he can muster up from his depths. I react, “Wow, that’s the world’s greatest hype man!” And then I hear the Father matter factly say, “I am your greatest hype man.”
What? God is rooting for me? Why is this such a surprise every time I hear it? As if we know ourselves better than God, our creator, who has proven time and time again that he’ll go through great lengths for us; we act as if he’s a distant, uninterested father. Maybe it’s our wounds? We’ve been betrayed more times than we can count? Had a bad father? Been disappointed so many times it’s hard to believe things will work out? Whatever it is, he is waiting to open the door, all you need to do is ask.
